Module 2. The Natural Gas Delivery System
Closing a service meter valve
Gas service meter valves have “on” and “off” positions.
With all quarter-turn natural gas meter valves, the valve is open when the valve lug is in line with the gas pipe, and the valve is closed when the lug is crosswise to the pipe. Usually, moving the valve a quarter-turn to the right closes the valve.
You must follow three critical and essential rules for gas service meter valves under all circumstances:
- Close a gas meter service valve only if you have been advised by the local gas utility and trained to do so.
- Always inform local gas utility personnel if a gas meter service valve has been closed.
- Never turn any gas valve back on after it has been closed. Only trained gas utility personnel may turn the gas back on and restore service.
